SIMRITA GAUBA

Simrita Gauba’s remarkable journey as a mentor spans across decades, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those she has touched. Born on 1st August 1934 in Gujranwala, Pakistan; settled in Karnal after the partition, and after her schooling completed her Teacher’s training and acquired B.Ed. degree in 1954-55.

Life took an enchanting turn when Simrita married Sh. Swaran Singh Gauba, an Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) officer, in 1959. Always an adaptable and resilient person, she embraced the journey of a railway officer’s spouse. Despite the challenges of her husband’s transferable job, Simrita remained refreshingly independent and decided to work in the hospitality industry (hospitality industry having its presence in most cities), simultaneously honing her culinary skills and earning accolades for her exceptional cooking.

In 1992, fate intervened, leading Simrita and her husband to Gurudwara Rakab Ganj Sahib in Delhi, where they discovered Baru Sahib – a life-changing moment that sparked a profound connection with the institution. Intrigued by the selfless service and education provided by Baru Sahib, they wholeheartedly offered to contribute Through Sewa (selfless service), and thereon started a 14-year association that would change their lives forever.

Initially only Sh. Gauba moved base to Baru Sahib post his retirement. Soon, however, Baru Sahib’s magnetic pull brought Simrita back repeatedly, and she actively participated in various endeavors at the institution.

Reception desk, streamlining administrative operations and setting a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all who visited. With her culinary expertise, Simrita elevated the experience of guests by introducing a delectable array of pickles, puddings, and special cuisines. Guests at Baru Sahib, ranging from dignitaries of State and Central governments to academicians from across the world, savored her cooking with delight.
Her husband, Sh. Gaubaji, was very fond of Mathematics and actively taught Vedic mathematics to the students. The joy of witnessing young minds flourish and achieve their potential fueled their passion for making a difference in the lives of the children. He played an instrumental role in setting up the Math Lab, helping children develop a love for mathematics. To encourage academic excellence, he offered cash rewards from his own funds (in addition to the rewards offered by the school), to students achieving full marks in Mathematics paper in board exams.
The passing of her beloved husband in 2012 brought a profound sense of loss, but Simrita’s love for Baru Sahib remained steadfast. Even as her visits to the institution became rarer due to distance and age, her affection for Dr. Neelam Kaur and Dr. Davinder Singh Ji and their children continued to grow. Her selflessness and dedication left an indelible impression on the hearts of everyone she met at Baru Sahib.
Now, at 89 years old, Simrita Gauba remains an inspiration to all who know her.

Fueled by curiosity and a desire to bring about positive changes in the agricultural sector, he embarked on a remarkable academic journey that would shape the course of his life and leave an enduring legacy.

Johl’s thirst for knowledge led him to pursue higher education in agriculture and economics at Punjab University, where he excelled in his studies. He earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in agriculture and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in agricultural economics. Undeterred by challenges, he continued his pursuit of academic excellence and attained a Master’s degree (MA) in economics, followed by a Doctoral degree (PhD) from Punjabi University in 1952. His commitment to learning and research paved the way for a career that would be dedicated to transforming agriculture and rural development in India.

In the early years of his professional journey, Johl worked tirelessly in the hilly regions of Punjab, focusing on agriculture and rural development.
